While the works have long been\u003cbr\u003eunderstood as belonging to the flute—evidenced in particular by the lowest\u003cbr\u003epitch of D, corresponding to the instrument’s range—their melodic and\u003cbr\u003eharmonic construction often implies a flexibility of realization. In adapting\u003cbr\u003ethem for the bassoon, small adjustments have been made in places where the\u003cbr\u003eoriginal texture privileges the third of a chord over a more structurally\u003cbr\u003egrounded bass note, in order to better suit the instrument’s role and\u003cbr\u003ecapabilities.
